4-H POULTRY JUDGING CONTEST

The Coffee County 4-H Poultry Judging Teams had a great day at the Area Poultry Judging Contest in Tifton on May 1. The Senior 4-H team placed third out of ten teams competing. Team scores are composed of the three highest scores earned by individuals on that team. The Senior 4‑H members whose scores comprised the team score included T.K. McIver, Kyya Johnson and Jeremiah Brantley. T.K. McIver was recognized as the highest individual scorer in the senior contest. Our Junior team high scorers were Jenna Sears, Sariah Wells, and Kalyn Woods.

Senior team members included Jeremiah Brantley, Kyya Johnson, T.K. McIver, Ta'Kyla Robinson and Micheal Woods. Junior team members included Amelia Crockett, Glenn O'Steen, Jenna Sears, Weston Vickers, Janilla Warren, Sariah Wells, Carlee Woods and Kalyn Woods.

In the contest, 4-H members must compare a class of four laying hens to rank them based on their past egg production and be able to present oral reasons on their placing. They must also grade eggs by candling, judge exterior quality, and grade broken-out eggs. From the meat industry, the 4-H members must grade ready-to-cook birds and learn to identify different cuts of meat. They are also given an exam with questions which come from the 4-H Poultry Judging manual.

Congratulations T.K. McIver for placing first and to the Senior team for placing third in the contest.

BB TEAM COMPETES AT STATE

The Coffee County 4-H BB Rifle Team, composed of eight team members, traveled to the Rock Eagle 4-H Center on Friday, May 4, to compete in the State 4-H BB Rifle Match on May 5. Approximately 80 teams with over 570 shooters from counties all over Georgia competed in the contest. Team members J.J. Aldridge, Carson Chancey, Amelia Gibson, Harleigh Hope, Allison Merritt, Caelan Merritt, Huey Underhill and Jessica Whitley were coached by W.B. Merritt. Rebecca Hope, Tori Merritt and Brenda Stone also chaperoned the weekend trip.

The competition included shooting ten record shots in each position (prone, standing, sitting, and kneeling) as well as a written test on information from the Georgia 4-H BB Safety Guide and test bonus questions from the NRA 5 Meter BB Gun Rule Book.
