4-H roundup: Senior camp, shotgun team, goat show news

Kevin D. Tatum, County Extension Coordinator

Coffee County Senior 4-H members had the opportunity to attend Senior 4-H Camp at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton, Georgia. Participants included Ashton Ates, Jeremiah Brantley, Amelia Crockett, Terryanna Harris, Justin Strickland, Sariah Wells, and AmeriCorps Member and chaperon Chalanda Woods. Campers enjoyed a picnic and fireworks at the 4-H center to kick off the week’s activities. They participated in workshops at Rock Eagle and also visited the University of Georgia campus where they dined in one of the dining halls, attended a workshop put on by UGA faculty, toured the campus, and visited the UGA Bookstore.

Jeremiah Brantley was also taking part in the Georgia 4-H Officer Training for District Officers. This was a separate track held in conjunction with Senior Camp. The 8 member Junior and Senior District Boards from each of the four 4-H Districts participated in this training totaling 64 officers in training.

Senior camp is a great week for our 4-H members to reunite with old friends as well as make new friends from all over the state of Georgia. They all have a great time at camp and look forward to it every year.

Shotgun Team News

The Coffee County 4-H Shotgun team traveled to Savannah for the weekend of May 25-26 to compete in the Georgia 4-H Trap, Skeet, and Sport Clays Match. The match was held at the Forest City Gun Club. Coffee 4-H had a senior 4-H team (grade 9-12) and a junior 4-H team (7th & 8th graders), both composed of four individuals, to compete in the match. Teams can be composed of three to four members. Senior 4-H team members included Hudson Lott, Drew Purvis, Michael Roberts, and Avery Vincent. The junior 4-H team included Alex Dunn, Gavin Grantham, J.P. Harper, and Weston Vickers. Senior shooters shoot 100 rounds in Trap, 100 rounds in Skeet, and 100 rounds in Sporting Clays. For junior shooters, it is only 75 rounds in each contest event.

The Junior Team had a great day shooting and placed third place overall in the match. Alex Dunn was recognized for having the highest school in the junior sporting clay match as well as the third highest overall score in the junior competition.

Coaches for the teams include Richard Grantham and Jody Ridlehoover. A special thank you goes out to our coaches for their dedicated service and to the shotgun team parents for their support of all of the team members competing. Congratulations shooters and coaches on your successes this year.
