The Nature Conservancy will hold its annual Broxton Rocks Easter Open House on Sunday, April 16 from 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm.  This annual event brings approximately 100-200 visitors to Coffee County.  Visitors are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch and discover a natural wonder here in Coffee County.

Considered a natural wonder in South Georgia, the Broxton Rocks are part of a 15,000 square-mile band of subsurface sandstone known as the Altamaha Grit, formed by shifts in the Earth’s tectonic plates eons ago.  Rare plants, unique wildlife and a waterfall are only a part of the discoveries awaiting visitors on this date.

Participants should follow the listed guidelines:  Participants should be in good physical shape – Broxton Rocks is not ADA accessible – no wheel chairs, walkers, canes, breathing apparatuses, etc.  Tours will be offered on Easter.  Tours are not advisable for people who have any problems that limit walking. This may include, feet, legs, knees, hip, back and any respiratory conditions.  Children under the age of 12 must be supervised – One supervising adult per child.

Please dress accordingly. Wear comfortable and protective clothing to protect yourself against bugs, sun, weather, briars, bushes, etc.  Comfortable shoes with good treads are a MUST due to the fact that you will be walking approximately 1 ½ miles total over uneven and rocky ground.  The tour takes approximately 2 hours to complete.  Please feel free to bring and carry: Bug spray, sunscreen, cameras, bottled water, non-alcoholic beverages, and snacks.  Anything you bring in, you must bring out with you.  Please help keep the preserve clean.  All individuals will follow the tour guide.  Each individual will have to complete a release of liability form in advance.  There are no facilities (NO RESTROOMS) at the Broxton Rocks Preserve. Pets are prohibited.  Under unfavorable weather conditions of light mist and rain, the tour will go forth as planned.  However, in the event of heavy rain, snow, or sleet the tour will automatically be cancelled.

Contributions are accepted to help support conservation work throughout Georgia. Visit www.nature.org/georgia and click the Ways of Giving link or send checks to the Nature Conservancy along with a letter expressing if your donation is for general support or should specifically be used in the greater Broxton Rocks area.  For more information about the Broxton Rocks Preserve or the Nature Conservancy, please call (404) 253-7255 or email tncgeorgia@tnc.org.
