During the hot summer months, South Georgians appreciate the comfort of air conditioning. One of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s Air Conditioning students on the Coffee Campus was recently recognized by Whitehead Industrial Hardware of Valdosta. Angelique Tucker and her instructor Scott Watson traveled to Valdosta for the ceremony. Tucker was among four students from Wiregrass who were recognized. Steven George Shively (Industrial Systems Technology), Aaron Player (Automotive Technology), Morgan Davis (Welding) and Angelique received the Distinguished Tradesmen Award presented by Whitehead Industrial Hardware. Each student was presented with a plaque and a $250 store credit to purchase tools for their fields. The recipients were chosen by their Wiregrass instructor.

Tucker entered the Air Conditioning program after looking to try something different in her career choice; being the only female in her class didn’t bother her. She encourages other women to try non-traditional fields like she did with Air Conditioning. “Never be afraid of what people may say or think,” advised Tucker. She will graduate in July from Wiregrass in Air Conditioning and has already begun her job search. In January, Air Conditioning Technology Diploma was named to the list of programs that qualify for the HOPE Career Grant. The grant is available to HOPE Grant-qualified student who enrolls in select majors specifically aligned with one of the 12 industries in Georgia for which there are more jobs available than there are skilled workers to fill them.

For more information about Air Conditioning or other programs, Wiregrass offers, visit www.wiregrass.edu. The Coffee Campus will be hosting a Free Application Day on Thursday, June 21. Those who apply on that day will have their application fee waived. Fall Semester classes start August 15.
