Officials with the Coffee County Sheriff's Office provided the following information Thursday regarding two recent arrests for suspected methamphetamine distribution.

The Douglas-Coffee H.E.A.T. Unit conducted a traffic stop on Feb. 23 on a vehicle on Hwy 221 N. that was driven by a subject the officer knew to have a suspended license. The driver was identified as Fred Randall Meeler.

A Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit K-9 deputy and detective assisted with the traffic stop. Upon further investigation, Meeler was found to be in possession of three packages of methamphetamine, totaling approximately 3.5 grams, and a small amount of marijuana.

Meeler was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.  He was also served with two bench warrants.

On Feb. 25, the Douglas-Coffee H.E.A.T. Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Hwy 32 E. for a tail light violation.  The Nicholls Police Department, along with the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit and Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, assisted with the stop.  Upon further investigation, David B. Bennett (the backseat passenger), was found to have a package of illegal narcotics in the crotch area in his pants.

Bennett was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine (47.9 grams), possession of marijuana with intent to distribute (34.1 grams) and two counts of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (X2).

Sheriff Doyle Wooten stated he would like to thank all the officers who continue to work towards ridding our community of these illegal drugs.

David B. Bennett
