June Carolyn Lane Hattaway, age 88, of Pearson, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at her residence.
June Carolyn Lane was born on February 20, 1931, in Manatee, Florida. Her parents were Lewis Howard Lane and Rhoda Matilda Rice Lane. She had one older sister, Dorothy Mae, and one younger brother, Dewey Edward. Her parents worked at a crate mill in Manatee. At age 11, they moved to Bartow, Florida, when her dad took a job at the Standard Coffee Company.
June started teaching Sunday School at age 16 and taught for 70 years. She attended high school at Summerlin Institute in Bartow. At age 16, she worked at a local dime store. After high school graduation, June started working at Peninsular Telephone Company as a telephone operator until she married and moved to Georgia. She devoted the rest of her life to being a faithful wife and mother, raising four children, and being a full time home maker. Mrs. Hattaway was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Douglas, Georgia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ethridge Marlow Hattaway, and a great grandchild, Adelyn Marie “Addie” Wilkes.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Donald Hattaway (wife Sonia) of Douglas, GA; three daughters, June Ellen Beverly (husband Jack) of Douglas, GA, Nancy Whittle (husband Bennie) of Douglas, GA, and Karen Wilkes of Kennesaw, GA; eight grandchildren, Jay Beverly, Dr. Chad Whittle, Andrew Wilkes (wife Kristy), Kaleb Wilkes (wife Jordan), Kaley June Tanner (husband Jameson), Nathan Hattaway, Daniel Hattaway and Anna Lane Hattaway; five great grandchildren, Addison Beverly, Gavin Beverly, Harper Wilkes, Barrett Wilkes and Olsen Tanner; sister, Dorothy Mae Haddox of Marietta, GA, and a brother, Dewey Edward Lane, of Ft. Meade, FL.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at Eastside Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at 11:00 am at Eastside Baptist Church with Rev. Christian Colson, Dr. Donald Hattaway and Rev. Andrew Wilkes officiating. Dr. Chad Whittle and Kaleb Wilkes will be giving family memories. Interment will follow at the Roberts/Hattaway Family Cemetery, 1365 Bent Pine Rd, in Coffee County. Music will be provided by John Glosson singing “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” Sonia Hattaway, Kaley June Tanner and Anna Lane Hattaway will sing a medley of children’s songs in honor of their grandmother’s 70 years of teaching children’s Sunday School. A congregational song, “Victory in Jesus”, will conclude the service. Jay Beverly will provide piano accompaniment throughout the service.
Pallbearers were Dr. Chad Whittle, Rev. Andrew Wilkes, Kaleb Wilkes, Nathan Hattaway, Daniel Hattaway, Bryan Allison and Alexander Allison. Honorary pallbearers were Bennie Whittle and Jack Beverly.
