South Georgia State College’s trademark defense held USC-Salkehatchie to 14 first half points Tuesday night on the way to a 76-49 win.

Tyrone Sam led the Hawks (4-0) with 21 points, two assists, and three steals. Karim Mawuenyega had a complete game of 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Head coach Cory Baldwin said the Hawks’ fourth consecutive win had both its high and low points. The team grabbed 55 rebounds and forced 28 turnovers but only shot 31 percent from the free throw line.

“That’s probably the best we’ve rebounded and played defense this season,” said Baldwin. “The bad news is our three-point percentage (50 percent) was better than our free throw percentage. That’s something we have to work on in practice.”

The final game of the Hawks’ current homestand is Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Summer Hill Post Graduate. General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
