A work in progress. That’s about the best way to describe the Coffee Trojans’ spring scrimmage against Brooks County Friday night at Jardine Stadium. Preseason scrimmages utilize a variety of different rules, all designed to give both teams a live action workout while keeping player safety at the forefront.
Coffee scored a couple of touchdowns during the contest while Brooks scored one its own. The Trojans will have to replace a number of key players on both sides of the ball this year, not the least of which is at quarterback. Head coach Robby Pruitt and his staff have several options under center and used all of them Friday; the Trojans tested no fewer than four quarterbacks during the game.
It’s hard to draw too many conclusions from any preseason game, especially a very controlled spring scrimmage. It was, however, good to see the Trojans back in action and getting some reps in as summer workouts loom.
The Trojans begin their season on Aug. 3 against Fitzgerald. Coach Pruitt’s son, Tucker, is Fitzgerald’s head coach. The two have faced each other previously when Tucker Pruitt was an assistant at Valdosta High. This will be the first time the two have squared off as head coaches.
