Mr. Louis C. “L. C.” Spivey, age 97 of Douglas, passed away early Monday morning, July 28, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Spivey was born July 26, 1917, to the late John Henry Spivey and the late Mary Jane Davis Spivey.

Mr. Spivey, a native of Coffee County, was a former carpenter and a cabinet maker with Fleetwood Mobile Homes and later a custodian for the West Ward Street Church of God. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Magdalene Suffling Spivey, four brothers; Phillip Spivey, Rev. J. Frank Spivey, T. J. Spivey, and H. D. Spivey, and two sisters, Phronie Clayton and Ruby Holton.

Mr. Spivey was a member of the West Ward Street Church of God and a member of the Hope Sunday school class. Survivors include his wife, Nina Ellis Bookout Spivey of Douglas; one daughter, Linda S. Purvis Branch and husband Jesse of Douglas; two brothers, Joe Spivey and wife Cathryn of Marietta and Jack V. Spivey and wife Janice of Douglas; one step-daughter, Deborah Harper and husband Verlyn of Broxton; two grandsons, Michael Purvis and wife Rhonda of Douglas and David Purvis of Lyons; four step-grandchildren, Rhianna Branch of Fitzgerald, Adam Branch of Douglas, and Robbie Colby and Erica Colby, both of Douglas, and several nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, July 30, at the West Ward Street Church of God, with Rev. Britt Peavy and Rev. Billy Wilson officiating. The interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery, with Clark Holton presenting a special poem and prayer. Active pallbearers were Michael Purvis, David Purvis, Mark Lott, Jesse Branch, Verlyn Harper, and Clark Holton. Honorary Pallbearers were the staff of Bethany Hospice and members of the Hope Sunday school class. Special musical selections “My Redeemer Lives,” “The Moment I Am Gone,” “When I Get Home,” and “I Will Love You Forever”, were all presented by CD Music. “I Thirst” was rendered by the soloist, Lynda Bryan, with CD Music. “Pre-Lude” and “Post-Lude” soft hymns were presented by the pianist, Robyn Vickers.
