Mrs. Benton and Mrs. Woodard’s third graders at Westside Elementary are having a blast kicking off their multiplication math unit.

Students read the book One Hundred Hungry Ants written by Elinor J. Pinczes out loud for the first read. During the second read aloud, students worked in small groups in various locations of the room creating the story using manipulatives.

The story is about 100 hungry ants that are marching toward a picnic. The littlest ant does not think they are going fast enough so he continues making them get into new groups. The ants started out in one line of 100 and by the end of the book they were in 10 lines of 10. The students loved this learning activity and were thoroughly engaged during the entire lesson.

Teachers are Westside know how important it is for students to learn in a variety of ways. This lesson was a perfect example of giving students the opportunity to learn using the following multiple intelligences: verbal, logical, visual, kinesthetic, and interpersonal.
