As Ebola scares crop up around the country, hospitals nationwide including Coffee Regional Medical Center are preparing for what to do if they find themselves face-to-face with the deadly virus. Coffee Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Preparedness Program is in place to train, educate, and to prepare for any potential dangers to public health.
CRMC is collaborating with Georgia Department of Public Health, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ASPAR (Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response), GEMA and local community partners to ensure a quick response and containment if we have a suspected Ebola patient. CRMC along with EMS and 911 are actively screening patients with questions to determine if they have been exposed. Possible Ebola patients will be immediately isolated from general patient population.
“We are participating in weekly conference calls and exercises with the CDC to ensure we stay up-to-date on the latest protocols and treatments. We are taking every precaution to ensure our patients and staff are safe and prepared. To date there have only been three documented cases in the US and it is unlikely that we will encounter an Ebola patient in Douglas; however, CRMC is continually preparing to care for our patients in the event of an exposure,” states Mike Etheridge, Director EMS.
If you have traveled to an area with an Ebola outbreak or had close contact with a person sick with Ebola, you may be at risk if you had direct contact with blood or body fluids or items that came into contact with blood or body fluids from a person with Ebola. Get medical care right away if you have a fever (higher than 101.5°F), severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or unexplained bleeding or bruising.
Tell your doctor about any recent travel to West Africa and/or any contact with a person who was sick with Ebola and your symptoms before you go to the doctor’s office or emergency room. Calling ahead will prepare the staff to better care for you and protect other people.
