The Atlanta Metro Trailblazers put together a late second half run Wednesday night to defeat No. 18 South Georgia State College, 70-61.

“We played good defense, but this was the second game in a row where we shot 20 percent from the field,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “They (Atlanta Metro) did a good job of hitting some big shots late in the game.”

Jovante’ Spivey led the Hawks (22-4, 11-3) with 22 points.  Cody Helgeland had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Daniel Peace finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals.

The loss was the second in a row for the Hawks, but they remain alone in first place in the GCAA after Gordon State defeated Georgia Highlands in overtime Wednesday night.  Baldwin knows what’s at stake with four regular season games remaining.

“We have to put these last two games behind us and concentrate on East Georgia Saturday afternoon,” said Baldwin.  “If we take care of business these next three games, we win the conference.”

The East Georgia game will be in Swainsboro at 4 p.m. Saturday.  The Hawks will return home Wednesday night against Central Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. for the last home game of the regular season.  If they win those two games, the Hawks will have a chance to clinch their first regular season conference title Feb. 21 in a showdown at Georgia Highlands.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
