Fast action by local law enforcement led to the quick capture of a jail inmate who attempted a daring, yet brief, escape Saturday afternoon.
Authorities say that at around 4:30 p.m., a Charlton County transport officer was delivering a Charlton County inmate to the Coffee County Jail, which regulary houses inmates from other counties.
Upon entering the sallyport at the law enforcement center, the transport officer requested a wheelchair be brought to the transport vehicle to carry the inmate inside, as he was complaining of being in pain and having difficulty walking.
When the Coffee County jail officer returned with the wheelchair, he was advised by the Charlton County transport officer that the inmate had somehow removed the handcuffs and had run from her. The handcuffs were found lying on the asphalt nearby. The grounds were immediately checked and it was determined the inmate had climbed the razor wire fence.
Immediately, all law enforcement was advised of the escape and told to be on the lookout for the inmate. Officers began patrolling the immediate area around the law enforcement center.
The escapee was apprehended at approximately 5:30 p.m. near the railroad tracks behind Coffee Subdivision and is now in custody at the Coffee County Jail.
The Inmate has been identified as Troy Wilson Lambert. He was charged in Charlton County for battery-domestic violence and burglary. Lambert may be facing additional charges in Coffee County after his escape.
