The Douglas Police Department will be conducting a Citizen Police Academy course starting August 13 at the Douglas Police Department. The course lasts eight weeks, and a light meal and refreshments will be provided.

The course will cover numerous areas and is designed to introduce and inform citizens of the role of law enforcement in the community and familiarize them with some of the applications of law.

“In the hopes to offer our community a better insight to our day to day operations, we are happy to offer these classes for the citizens of Douglas and Coffee County,” says Police Chief Gary Casteloes.  “The Citizen Police Academy will be an educational experience for everyone who participates.”

The class hours will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday night, lasting from August 13 through September 24. The last day of the Academy will be an all-day event on Saturday October 3.

The last day of training will include firearms training at the Douglas Firearms Training Facility.  Some of the topics covered will be police dept. structure, crime scene processing, family violence, juvenile law, gangs, evidence procedures, patrol operations, use of force, firearms training, internal affairs, complaint process, disciplinary process, and participants will conduct a ride-along with an officer during the course.

You do not have to be a resident of Douglas to attend this course. It is open to all citizens over 18 years of age.  Class maximum will be 20 participants, minimum will be 12.  The registration deadline is August 6.

Registration forms are available from the Douglas Police Department or contact Commander Bart McCulloch at (912) 384-2222 Ext. 3616.
