Coffee and Telfair County law enforcement agencies were on the lookout over the weekend for individuals wanted in connection with two incidents of attempted carjacking in which the alleged perpetrators masqueraded as police officers.
Around 12:20 a.m. Friday, Telfair 911 was contacted in reference to a report that two separate vehicles had been pulled over on U.S. Hwy. 441 South by unknown subjects using a pick-up truck equiped with a blue lights, Tealfair authorities reported.
Deputies were dispatched to the area and were unable to locate any vehicle matching the descriptions given. Coffee County 911 was also contacted and no Coffee County units were successful in making contact with any such vehicle.
The Telfair County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this incident by concentrated patrols, interviewing the complainants and attempting to locate any additional witnesses or information that may help in corroborating the report, as well as identifying any potential vehicles and/or suspect(s).
“We believe there was an incident somewhere along Hwy. 441 between Cedar Park Rd. (in Telfair County) and Broxton Friday night, but some of the information obtained so far has proven contradictory,” officials said.
The Telfair County Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to always pay attention to their surroundings.
“If you find yourself being pulled over by any vehicle other than a fully marked patrol car, you should slow down to a safe speed and contact 911 in order to confirm the stop as legitimate. Law enforcement will be out in force and anyone found to be in possession of unlawful blue lights or impersonating law enforcement officers will be arrested on felony charges and prosecuted,” authorities stated.
The suspect vehicle was described as a black Dodge Ram, a black four-door pick up, or a gold or silver F-150 pick-up truck equipped with a blue light. The three black male suspects were reported to be wearing black shirts, shorts, and shoes and possibly armed and wearing black masks.
Investigators say they are carefully scrutinizing certain details from the initial reports and any new developments will be disseminated as appropriate.
