A Douglas man who boasts a lengthy criminal record with multiple felony convictions and incarcerations was arrested twice last week on back-to-back days after Douglas police responded to the same location in regards to domestic disputes.
On April 27, officers were dispatched to 905 Brooks Ave., where the complainant stated she and her ex-boyfriend, identified as 35-year-old Kareem Jabbar Ates, had been in an altercation. Following an investigation into the matter, police arrested Ates, charging him with disorderly conduct and resisting officers.
Ates was apparently released from jail shortly thereafter and returned to the same location the following day. Douglas authorities were again dispatched to the residence, and the same complainant/victim told them Ates had returned to gather some of his belongins. While there, she said, another altercation ensued and escalated into a shoving match between the two. She evidently was able to get the upper hand in the battle, however, telling police she sprayed the alleged offender with mace as he was making his way out of the residence.
It was also discovered that Ates had previously been banned from the Douglas Housing Authority, where the incidents occurred. He was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and, again, taken to the Coffee County Jail.
Records obtained through the Georgia Department of Correction’s website revealed that Ates has a criminal record dating back to 1999. He has served at least six prison terms on various convicitons including theft, cocaine distribution, firearms charges, and multiple motor vehicle violations.
The same records show Ates was most recently released from prison in Sept. 2014 and is currently serving on parole.
