The South Georgia State College Hawks went 1-2 at the East Central District Tournament in Morristown, Tennessee, last week. The Hawks, who earned a berth in the tournament after finishing second in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Conference, followed the same path to the tournament that they did four years ago. In 2011, South Georgia won the championship and went to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

This year, however, the Hawks ran into a pair of buzz saws from Tennessee in eventual tournament champion Walters State Community College and Chattanooga State Community College. The Hawks lost to Walters State in game one then defeated Darton State College, who had beaten SGSC in the GCAA tournament. The Hawks trailed Darton 7-0 after five innings before the SGSC bats woke up. South Georgia scored nine runs over the final four innings to win 9-8 and send Darton home early. That set the stage for a showdown against Chattanooga State. The Hawks came up short and saw their hopes of returning to Grand Junction end in Tennessee.

“It was a magnificent run. What a journey! Qualifying for the East Central District Championship Tournament is an honor in itself. I would like to thank the players, coaching staff, SGSC, and our fans and family as they have shown tremendous support during this season. I hope to continue this success for future seasons to come,” stated Jeff Timothy, SGSC head baseball coach.
