Clauden Pubien, the last remaining co-defendant charged in connection with the 2013 murder of Daquavious Reed, pled guilty to a lighter charge Wednesday in Coffee County Superior Court and walked away with probation.
Pubien pled guilty to robbery by force and, as a result, the district attorney’s office opted to not prosecute the murder charge against him.
In an e-mail sent to Douglas Now Wednesday night, Assistant District Attorney Ian Sansot stated,”(Pubien’s) two co-defendants were the primary conspirators and have already been convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. The reason for this difference in sentence is the fact that the evidence against Pubien was different than the evidence against Claron and D’andre Carter.”
Sansot added that Pubien has spent nearly two years behind bars pending trial. As part of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to a total of 20 years, the remainder of which he will be allowed to spend on probation.
“After discussing the case with other attorneys in our office and Mr. Reed’s family, we believed that this offer was the best sentence we could get with the evidence that we had,” Sansot said.
Pubien also entered a plea Wednesday to burglary in the first degree in a case unrelated to Reed’s murder. He was sentenced to 20 years of probation on that charge, which will run concurrent with his robbery conviction.
