Students from all levels were recognized during the annual presentation of the school system’s Artwork Calendar during the regular monthly meeting of the Coffee County Board of Education on Aug. 27.

Entering its 22nd year of production, the school board recognized those students whose art was selected for display on the 2015-2016 school calendar.

Dr. Morris Leis, Superintendent, and Kim Clayton, Director of Personnel and Public Relations, presented each student with a certificate as all students earned the monthly Superintendent’s Award.  As a special surprise, Mr. Sonny Lyon from Lyon Management, owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Krystal’s, was personally recognized and received the Superintendent’s Award for his sponsorship of the calendar since 1996.

“Without Mr. Lyon it would be a very expensive piece for us to produce.”  stated Mrs. Clayton. “We appreciate his annual support of not only our system but, most importantly, our boys and girls. It is such a wonderful way to showcase our students’ talents.”

This was a special year for Mr. Lyon as his granddaughter, London Davis, was featured on the calendar representing Eastside Elementary.

A key factor in the success of the final product selected is the art teachers within the system.  At the elementary level, classroom teachers work with the students on their creativity. Moving into the secondary level, art is an elective so the individual art teachers are responsible for the students’ talents.  From Coffee Middle School, Ken Suttles; From G.W. Carver Freshman Campus, Sara Wood, and from Coffee High, Julie Lord.

Within the next month, the students’ art will be matted and framed for display within the halls of the central office throughout the school year.
