The Coffee Trojans won big Friday night over the Brunswick Pirates 27-3. But that’s not how the game started. In fact, for most of the first half, it didn’t look like either team was going to score. The Trojans finally broke the scoreless tie late in the second quarter when Demetrius Davis scampered 22 yards into the end zone on a Statue of Liberty play. The extra point was good and Coffee had a 7-0 lead with just over a minute left in the quarter.
Seconds later, Tray Bryant recovered the ensuing kick on the Pirates’ 17-yard line to set up the Trojans’ next score, a run of the same distance by Greg Williams. An unsportsmanlike penalty made the point-after a 35-yarder, which Coffee missed. Time expired a few moments later and the Trojans carried a 13-0 lead into half-time.
Brunswick put up the only points of the third quarter, a 41-yard field goal with 53 seconds left in the period. The Coffee defense kept the Pirates at bay while the Trojan offense racked up more points. Tywone Brewton and Milton Jackson scored fourth-quarter touchdowns to propel the Trojans to a 27-3 victory.
Coffee is now 7-1 on the season and 5-1 in region play. The Trojans are also in excellent position atop the region standings after Effingham County defeated Ware 24-21. Coffee is off next Friday night then has two regular season games remaining – Oct. 30 at home against Richmond Hill and Nov. 5 against Bradwell Institute in Hinesville.
