South Georgia State College’s men’s and women’s swim teams opened their season at home Nov. 7 with a big win against three schools – LaGrange College, Point University, and Thomas University. SGSC finished with a total of 403 points, followed by Thomas University (227), Point University (62), and LaGrange College (44).

Leading the Swim Hawks were Carolyn Ives (Carrollton, Ga.) and Mitchell Graham (Columbus, Ga.). Ives won the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and broke the school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:15:52. Graham won both breaststroke events along with the 200 freestyle.

Other multiple winners included Caitlyn Meece (Kathleen, Ga., 100 and 200 breaststroke); Bekah Morris (Warner Robins, Ga., 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle); and Austin Vines (Moultrie, Ga., 100 and 200 breaststroke). Taking top honors in one event were Alex Haymond (Columbus, Ga., 50 freestyle); Ryan Davis (Ochlocknee, Ga., 400 individual medley); and Kiana Ocasio-Molina (Jacksonville, Fla., 100 backstroke).

“It was a total team effort,” commented Head Coach C.M. Jenkins. “We won not only several individual events but all six relays on the day. I am proud of our entire team for the hard work leading up to the season opener and for the great effort and win in front of the home crowd.”

The Swim Hawks will travel to LaGrange College this Saturday, Nov. 14 for a sprint meet.
