Friday the 13th proved to be the Coffee Trojans’ lucky day. Friday night, the Trojans throttled the Warner Robins Demons 37-10 at Jardine Stadium in the first round of the state playoffs. The win was Coffee’s 10th of the season; it’s the first time since 1981 and 1982 that the Trojans have had back-to-back 10-win seasons.
The Demons looked like they would play the Trojans tough. On their first possession, the Demons kicked a 28-yard field after a long but quick drive. Early in the game, the Demons had a 3-0 lead. Coffee answered with a 28-yard field goal attempt of their own on their first drive. The kick, however, was off its mark and Warner Robins held a small 3-0 advantage with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.
The lead, however, wouldn’t last.
The Trojans forced the Demons to punt on their second possession, and Cam Davis blocked the kick. Coffee took over at the Warner Robins 31. It didn’t take long to cover those 31 yards, and Jeremiah Ashley found the end zone to give Coffee the lead. Allen Martinez’s point-after was good and with 1:34 left in the first quarter, the Trojans had a 7-3 lead.
They wouldn’t look back for the rest of the game.
Coffee kept mistakes to a minimum and took advantage of several Demons’ miscues. The Trojans forced a Demons’ punt on their next possession. Coffee then marched 67 yards for another touchdown, this one a nine-yard run by Demetrius Davis – his first of three touchdowns on the night. The extra point put Coffee up 14-3. Coffee ended the first half with a 45-yard field goal by Allen Martinez to carry a 17-3 lead into half-time.
In the third quarter, the Demons scored early to get within seven points. The Trojans, who started out the second half with sloppy play, fought their way out of their early funk and scored three more times while holding Warner Robins scoreless for the remainder of the game. Demetrius Davis scored twice (five yards and 12 yards) while Tywon Brewton scored once on a short run. The Demons blocked the last Coffee extra point but it didn’t affect the outcome of the game. The Trojans cruised to a 37-10 victory and will play in the second round of the state playoffs next Friday night, again at Jardine Stadium. At the time of this writing, it was unclear who Coffee’s opponent would be.
“This was a big win for us. I’m proud of the way we played. They moved the ball well but we were able to slow them down when we needed to. They’re big and physical but we did a good job of controlling the clock in the second half,” said head coach Robby Pruitt following the game.
