Douglas police arrested a suspect this week they say is responsible for an armed robbery that occurred in the early morning hours at a local store.
Officials reported the department responded to Aden’s Minit Market, 1020 E. Baker Hwy., around 12:45 a.m. on Nov. 15 in reference to a robbery. Officers were advised that a black male with dread locks, wearing a grey hooded jacket, entered the business, and proceeded to the drink cooler. The offender got a drink out of the cooler and approached the counter. When the store clerk opened the cash register, the suspect allegedly produced a large silver or chrome handgun and demanded money. The clerk allowed him to remove an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, and the offender fled the scene on foot.
Shortly after 2 p.m. the following day, officers received information that the offender was spotted at the Douglas Wal-Mart, 1450 S.E. Bowens Mill Rd. Police were able to locate and identify the suspect at the store, and he was arrested on scene.
Officials have identified the alleged offender as 21-year-old Edward Whitehead, who now faces an array of charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
