Tyrone Sam’s complete game of 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals helped propel the South Georgia State College Hawks to their first conference win Wednesday night. SGSC (13-3, 1-2) defeated the South Georgia Tech Jets 71-61.

Other leading scorers were Dunavon Robinson (12 points, three rebounds, and three assists), Zaquavion Smith (11 points), and Karim Mawuenyega (10 points).

Both teams set the tone of a hard-fought, defensive struggle early in the game. Head Coach Cory Baldwin said the Jets utilized multiple defenses, which helped them build a five-point halftime lead. The Jets extended their lead in the second half before the Hawks battled back and eventually pulled away for the win.

In the end, Baldwin said defense and free throws were the difference.

“That’s probably the best all-around defense we’ve played all year, especially in the second half,” said Baldwin. “In the first half, we were 0-for-5 at the free throw line. We made some big free throws in the second half, which helped us a lot.”

The Hawks will conclude their current homestand Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in a non-conference matchup against Faith Baptist Post Graduate. General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
