South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) men’s and women’s swim teams excelled Saturday, Jan. 9, during the South Georgia Sprint Meet held on SGSC’s Douglas Campus.

The Hawks finished first with both the men’s and women’s teams beating Thomas University. Point University came in third followed by LaGrange College in fourth place.

Coach CM Jenkins states, “It’s always tough to compete right after the holiday break, so it was great to see some strong times today as well as get the win for our fans. We still have some work to do to get ready for Regionals and Nationals; however, this is a great group of young men and women, and I look forward to the final stretch and seeing what they can do.”

Carolyn Ives from Carrolton, Ga. had a stellar day capturing first in each of her four events. Kiana Ocasio-Molina from Jacksonville, Fla. also won first in the 50 backstroke.

On the men’s side, eight swimmers secured a first place finish in their respective events.  The men’s 200 freestyle relay also had a first place finish. First place individual wins included Austin Vines (100 IM), Joshua Wolfe (100 backstroke), Dylan Villhauer (50 butterfly), Mitchell Graham (50 breaststroke), Tim Buisson (50 backstroke), Steven Lewis (200 IM), and Alex Haymond (200 freestyle).

The Hawks will be back in action Jan. 22-23 in Rome, Ga. at Berry College and at home Feb. 12 for the South Georgia Small College Championships. For more meet details or information on SGSC Swimming, visit www.sgsc.edu/athletics.
