Pitcher Gayden Hatcher held up his end of the bargain, but the SGSC Hawks baseball team couldn’t use Hatcher’s strong showing against the University of South Carolina (USC)-Salkehatchie to pull out a win. SGSC lost 2-1 in seven innings in the opening game of the doubleheader Feb. 13 in Allendale, S.C.

USC-Salkehatchie had no answer for Hatcher, who kept runners off the base paths during his appearance. USC-Salkehatchie managed just three hits off of the Hawks’ pitcher who allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out four during his five innings of work.

Brett Wilcox couldn’t get it done on the mound for the Hawks, taking the loss. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings, walked none, struck out two, and allowed one run.

The bottom of the third saw USC-Salkehatchie take an early lead with a solo home run to start the inning. The sixth inning saw SGSC score its only run on the day.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Jared Crews clubbed two home runs to carry the Hawks to a 7-3 win.

USC-Salkehatchie couldn’t get anything going as long as Caleb Hill was pitching. USC-Salkehatchie managed just three hits off of Hill, who allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out four during his five innings of work. The Hawks were sparked by Crews and Cameron Coffey, who teamed up for five hits and five RBIs.

The Hawks never trailed after scoring one run in the second on a solo home run by Crews. One USC-Salkehatchie run crossed the plate in the bottom half of the third, making the score 2-1. A sacrifice fly set off a USC-Salkehatchie rally which ended with an out on a ground ball.

Two more runs were added by the Hawks in the top of the fourth. A sacrifice fly scored Crews, then Jacob Schmidt scored on a single by Coffey.

One run in the bottom of the fifth helped USC-Salkehatchie close the deficit to 7-2. Another attempt at a rally was stopped by a strikeout by SGSC. USC-Salkehatchie scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to four. A fielder’s choice triggered USC-Salkehatchie’s comeback. An inning-ending fly wrapped up the attempt. The Hawks pulled out a 7 – 3 win.
