The South Georgia State College Lady Hawks softball team swept Darton State in a doubleheader March 4 in Douglas. SGSC (14-5) won the first game in six innings via the run-rule, 8-0. The Lady Hawks defeated the Lady Cavaliers 8-5 in game two to complete the sweep.

SGSC started the scoring in game one with four runs in the second, followed by three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Hawks built upon their lead with one run in the sixth. Makayla Clark racked up four RBIs on two hits. Megan Farmer and Whitney Oliver added a single and a double scoring runners across the plate.

The Lady Hawks’ Samantha Hays kept Darton off the scoreboard for all six innings she was in the circle. She pitched a shutout, allowing only three hits.

Game two proved to be more of a battle between the two teams. Despite Darton’s early lead in the top of the first, the Lady Hawks answered in the first inning with five runs. SGSC scored on an RBI single by Clark, an RBI single by Oliver, a fielder’s choice, and a two-run double by Amy Latner. Clark racked up three RBIs on two hits. The Lady Cavaliers attempted to close the deficit by adding four more runs during the game, but SGSC came out on top.

The Lady Hawks got the win thanks in large part to Oliver’s dominant, six-strikeout performance. Oliver allowed no earned runs, seven hits and one walk over six innings.

The Lady Hawks open up conference play March 12 against West Georgia Tech in Douglas.
