South Georgia State College’s baseball team swept a doubleheader March 22 by defeating Thomas University (JV) 5-0 and 3-2 in Douglas.
In game one, the Hawks (18-13, 3-1) got on the board in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly by Conner Durden and an RBI single by Wyatt Petry to plate the first two runs of the game. The scoreboard remained silent until the Hawks piled on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the lead. A single by Stephan Cruver ignited the offense, plating Landon Boyette, which was followed by Mikal Flores’ double, scoring Cruver. Cameron Coffey went 2-for-3, scoring one run. Will Lane picked up the victory allowing no earned runs and only one hit. He walked none and struck out one during his four innings of work. Brett Wilcox, Tanner Wright and Andrew Corbitt each pitched one inning.
In game two, the Hawks used three RBIs on three hits from Jared Crews to take and maintain the lead. Crews homered in the fourth inning bringing one across the plate and hit a two-run single in the fifth. Zack Refuse’s five strikeouts were enough to push the Hawks into a win. He allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks over six innings.
