The City of Douglas and Transwaste announced Monday a change in the collection of trash and recycling. Beginning the week of September 12, all trash service will be Monday –Thursday.
Residentswho will be affected by no garbage pickup on Fridays will be notified by Transwaste of their new garbage pickup day prior to changes taking place. The new days for those affected residents will be either Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
After several months of contamination of the recycling stream and confusion of the A/B pickup schedule, City of Douglas and Transwaste officials hope that going to a four day trash/garbage pickup and every other Friday recycling pickup will help curtail several problems of the past.
All recycling carts will be emptied on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016. After emptying all recycling carts on Friday, Sept. 16, the recycling schedule will be every other Friday. Recycling customers should receive a calendar postcard explaining the recycling changes.
When added recyclables to the recycling cart, please make sure all plastic and metal containers have been rinsed with water. Food containers should be rinsed clean and free of food particles. Food and cardboard boxes should be free of their liners, Styrofoam or any other packing material. Do not place regular household garbage in the recycling cart.
“Over the last year, we’ve tried several options to stop contamination of the recycling stream, ” says City Manager Terrell Jacobs. “Together with Transwaste, we hope this new schedule will benefit everyone by eliminating the A/B recycling schedule. If recycling contamination continues, we may be forced to remove recycling carts from residents who continue to misuse the recycling service.”
