Satilla Riverkeeper and friends invite the public to a watershed-wide “Satilla Rivers Alive” cleanup on Oct. 22 at the following locations:

– South Georgia State College, Douglas 31533 (Coffee Co.);
– Jamestown Landing: Jamestown Road, Waycross 31503(Ware Co.);
– FFA Camp Landing: Turkey Ridge Road, Patterson 31557 (Pierce Co.);
– U.S. 301 Landing: ~14 US-301, Nahunta 31553 (Brantley Co.);
– Ava Strickland Lightsey Landing: US 82 Bridge, Atkinson 31553 (Brantley Co.);
– Burnt Fort Landing: GA 252 Bridge, White Oak 31568 (Charlton Co.);
– St. Andrews Picnic Area: Beachview Drive, Jekyll Island, 31527 (Glynn Co.)

Participants can register at each of the sites beginning at 8:30 a.m. the day of the cleanup. The cleanup efforts will last from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and water, trash bags, and gloves will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear clothes and sturdy footwear that they don’t mind getting dirty. Participants are asked to gather for a sponsored lunch at noon at Twin Oaks Bluegrass Park at 401 Twin Oaks Drive, Hoboken 31542. Lunch will be provided by Firehouse Subs along with water and other refreshments. Free Rivers Alive T-shirts will also be available on a first come first serve basis.

This event is being conducted to help remedy the chronic trash problems on the Satilla River, particularly at popular river access locations. Trash negatively impacts the river’s water quality, the public’s recreational experience, wildlife, fishes, and eventually makes it’s way to the ocean impacting marine life as well.

The cleanup is in partnership with Rivers Alive, Georgia’s annual volunteer waterway cleanup event. It targets all waterways in the state including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and wetlands while creating awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia’s water resources.

The Satilla Riverkeeper thanks all of our community partners on this event, which includes South Georgia State College, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful, Friends of the Satilla River, Keep Brantly Beautiful and Litter Free, Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, CCGA – Biology Club, South Georgia Regional Commission, The Georgia Sea Turtle Center, City of Douglas, Republic Services, Advanced Disposal, Firehouse Subs, American Rivers, Rivers Alive, Twin Oaks Bluegrass Park, Waycross Kroger, and Carter Environmental Consulting, Inc.
