The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) hosted the 2016 Child Death Investigation Training Symposium Tuesday at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Georgia.  GBI Director Vernon Keenan provided opening remarks for the symposium.

Subject matter experts in the field provided instruction in the area of legal trends, sexual exploitation, child neglect, Georgia’s Child Abuse Protocol, and investigative techniques.

The GBI is committed to the investigation of child fatalities occurring in the state of Georgia in an effort to prevent such tragedies.  The GBI administers the Georgia’s Child Fatality Review Program (GCFR), a state funded program responsible for providing training and technical assistance to local child fatality review committees.  The purpose of the effort is to prevent accidental deaths and to identify and prosecute those responsible for the intentional harm to a child, resulting in death.

The following agencies teamed with the GBI to conduct this training: Department of Family & Children’s Services, Office of the Child Advocate, and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council.
