Zaire Cook’s basket with 6.6 seconds left in overtime lifted South Georgia State College to an 81-80 win Monday night against Middle Georgia Prep.
In a game atmosphere that resembled a midseason conference matchup, the Hawks (2-0) had a nine-point lead with two minutes remaining in regulation and watched their lead shrink to three over the next 1:20. Following a shot clock violation by the Hawks, Middle Georgia Prep hit a three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to tie the game (73-73) and force overtime.
Trailing 80-79 in the extra period, the Hawks forced a turnover with 34.2 seconds left, which set up Cook’s game-winning shot.
“They (Middle Georgia Prep) were a lot better this year compared to the last time we played them,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “I didn’t expect the game to go into overtime, but you can certainly learn a lot from a win like this that will prepare you for the rest of the season.”
Zaquavian Smith led the Hawks with 30 points, five rebounds, and two assists. O’Showen Williams had 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Cook and Shaquille Williams each finished with 11 points.
The Hawks’ current homestand continues Thursday night as they host Combine Academy-CTL. Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.
General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
