A late second half run, and strong shooting from the three-point line, helped the South Georgia State College Hawks extend their winning streak to four games Saturday afternoon, defeating TAAG Academy 94-77.

The game was back-and-forth in the first half, which included 12 ties and 10 lead changes. The Hawks (4-0) led 42-41 at halftime, and the game remained close until the 7:45 mark in the second half.

Leading 68-64, the Hawks generated a 12-2 run over the next 2:30. The run included six points in 30 seconds from Zaquavian Smith and three-pointers by Shaquille Williams and Nate Louis. The Hawks shot 53 percent from the three-point line in the second half.

Head coach Cory Baldwin said those two stats were the difference in the game.

“We only made two three-pointers in the first half, and I told the guys in the locker room that we weren’t going to win a lot of games with that kind of shooting,” he said. “I was pleased with the three-point shot selection in the second half, and that scoring run helped us, too.”

Smith led the Hawks with 25 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Jarred Heard and Jordan Young each finished with 12 points.

Following a game at USC-Salkehatchie, the Hawks return to Waycross Nov. 18-19 to host the Applebee’s Okefenokee College Classic. In addition to SGSC, the event will feature Combine Academy – Charlotte, South Georgia Tech, and Southern Crescent Tech. The Hawks are scheduled to play at 8 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 4 p.m. on Nov. 19.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
