Wal-Mart truck drivers raise thousands of dollars for schools around the United States for the education foundation with their program “Miles for Education.” The Wal-Mart Foundation makes a financial contribution to local schools for every accident-free mile driven by each of the company’s 7,200 tractor trailer drivers. For every mile, one penny was given to the program. This program has two aims, safe driving and funding for local schools, and they achieved both goals.

In November, Wal-Mart distribution representatives, Mr. Kenneth Morgan and Mr. John James, presented a $2,555.62 check to George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC). GWCFC was one of the schools to be selected as a recipient of the Miles for Education program.

This generous donation will benefit the students at GWCFC. There are no limitations on what the money has to be spent on, contrary to a majority of the funding a school receives. Principal, Mr. Abe Morris, plans to use the money on what he thinks will be best for the students.

To celebrate this impressive gift, GWCFC’s FBLA advisor, Ms.Brandy Barlow, treated all who attended with pizza, soda, and cake. Along with Ms. Barlow, her student members of FBLA joined in on the celebration, and Ms.Sarah Wood, art teacher and art club sponsor at GWCFC, also joined into the celebration with some of her art club students and other faculty and staff members. Both FBLA and the Art Club gave Morgan and James a club t-shirt.

Morris expressed his gratitude at the meeting, which was a joint meeting with members of FBLA and Art Club. This group of students watched the business exchange and saw an example of how transactions can be executed for communal contentment. Another attendant, Ms. Miri Cribb, who is the Honors Physical Science teacher at GWCFC, stated that the faculty and staff are “truly appreciative of the generous gift given to us by the Walmart Distribution Center.”
