On Monday, Jan. 16, City of Douglas employees and community members are invited to participating in the annual “Day On” community project, in honor of the Martin Luther, King Jr. Holiday, at the historic Little Lake Geneva Cemetery located off of Hwy. 158 on Burl Mill Rd. Volunteers will help rake, weed eat, pick up trash, trim limbs and help with other cleanup in the cemetery, as well as assist documentation of gravesites. Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately (gloves, hat, boots, etc). Tools will be provided.

“We would like to encourage our community and citizens to use the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday as a day to come together and lend a hand for a worthwhile community project,” says City Manager Terrell Jacobs.

Little Lake Geneva Cemetery was the site of an African-American Church by the same name approximately 50 years ago. The Pastor was Mr. L. J. Robinson and his grand-daughter, Ms. Rhomaine Henry, has recently taken the responsibility of overseeing the cemetery. The site has two structures, both beyond repair, that need removing and approximately 12 + or – graves. When the two structures are removed, the site could hold nearly 100 more burial plots.

In the past few years, the community “Day On” projects led by Cemetery Attendant Henry Milhollin, City Manager Jacobs, American Legion Post 515 and American Legion 18, have helped to clean up and document graves in five Coffee County cemeteries.

Anyone interested in participating should contact City Manager Terrell Jacobs at 912-389-3401 or Henry Milhollin, Douglas Cemetery Attendant, at 912-393-4796.
