The Douglas Police Department will be starting a program in an effort to reduce the number of thefts committed in the City of Douglas. The program involves officers identifying targets that are desirable to criminals and notifying the owners of the property.

“By implementing this new program, we hope to bring awareness to areas that could aid in criminal activities,” says Chief Gary Casteloes. “Our goal is to notify property owners so that they will take the preventative actions to help us keep our neighborhoods safe. We are asking for citizens to assist us in helping our efforts to prevent crime in your neighborhoods.”

If property owners are not available at the time, officers will leave green tags at the property that will identify conditions found by the Officer. The green tag will be labeled “Crime Prevention Notice,” with the following sentence, “It has been determined that persons with unlawful intent often look for inviting conditions prior to selecting a target for their crime,” and a list of conditions found on the property will be selected on the green card.

If a citizen discovers one of these tags, review the suggestions made by the Officer. Appropriate measures should be taken to make property less inviting to criminal activity. Citizens are also reminded that the Police Department has a “See Something, Say Something” 912-260-3600 crime tip line for reporting suspicious behavior or anonymous tips. For any questions or concerns, please call 912-384-2222 or visit www.cityfdouglas.com/police.
