Students at Westside Elementary School are rockin’, reading, and roaring in grades K-5!
At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, Westside Elementary issued a challenge to all students in K-5. The challenge was to work collectively to read at least 25,000,000,000 words by the end of the school year.
Each grade level was challenged to read a set number of words quarterly in order to participate in a full day of reading celebration. The students and staff have taken this challenge seriously and have been reading relentlessly at school and at home.
During the day of reading celebration, students rotate to different stations with planned activities built around a particular theme. The first reading celebration day was held in November with the theme being, “Camp Read S’More”. This past week, we held the second reading celebration day….”Rock-N-Roll Readers!”
Students enjoyed a day filled with a Karaoke Dance Party in the classroom, a Concert on the Lawn during P.E., Snack Time, Art Time with a Contest, and Line Dancing in the gym with live music provided by DJ Franchize!
During Art Time, students decorated a guitar with the title and scenes from their favorite book. At the end of the day, a panel went to each homeroom to choose a winner. The winner received a special prize from Mrs. Jowers, Principal.
We are extremely proud of all of our Super Hero Readers at Westside!
A special “Thank You” goes out to the faculty and staff for their hard work and encouragement to the students, to all the students for rockin’ their reading!, to the Literacy Team for arranging the events of the day, and to DJ Franchize for his awesome entertainment. We couldn’t have done any of this without YOU ALL!
