From Douglas, Georgia to Minneapolis, Minnesota. At least that’s the itinerary the South Georgia State College Academic Quiz Team enjoyed this season.

The SGSC Academic Quiz Team recently competed at the 2017 Community College Championship Tournament in the two year schools division in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The team consisted of Hailey Williamson, co-captain, Hong “Rose” Nguyen, co-captain, Saadia Akram, and Alejandro Briceno. SGSC’s team, seeded 18th, finished with a record of three wins and eight losses, thus ending the season.

SGSC had a particularly brutal schedule on the first day, facing two top five seeds, including eventual national champions Valencia – a team that finished 11-1. SGSC lost to Valencia by a respectable 90 points.

The team won two of their last three matches. Three of our four players finished in the top 50 out of 119 players, with team co-captain Hailey Williamson finishing 30th. Saadia Akram, making her first appearance for SGSC’s team at any competition, finished 44th – an outstanding debut given the level of competition and the accompanying pressure.

South Georgia State College congratulates the Academic Quiz team on its accomplishments this season. The team is under the guidance of Dr. Frank Holiwiski, associate professor of psychology.
