South Georgia State College (SGSC) students Loren Mertz of Nahunta and Kelsey Smith of Douglas were named to the All-Georgia Academic Team, a program sponsored by two-year college presidents, the national honor society for two-year colleges Phi Theta Kappa, and community college state associations. Mertz and Smith are members of Phi Theta Kappa’s Kappa Sigma chapter on the Douglas Campus. A recognition luncheon was recently held in their honor in Atlanta at the Sloppy Floyd Building Empire Room.
Colleges may nominate students from their campuses to the All-USA Academic Team. Students from Georgia nominated to the national team make up the All-Georgia Academic Team. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is a valued partner of the All-Georgia Academic Team.
The keynote speaker for the luncheon was Ms. Amy Clines, enrollment management administrator in undergraduate admissions and recruitment. She is passionate about improving student access to higher education, and continuously seeks different and improved ways to work with students, their families, and secondary school counselors to assist students in their pursuit of education beyond high school.
