At the regular City Commission Meeting on Monday, June 19, 2017, Mayor Tony L. Paulk and City Commissioners congratulated Ms. Sharnae Pegues for being named Georgia Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club of America. Pegues was introduced by Barry Bloom, President & CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Coffee County Region.
Bloom stated, “Sharnae was named the local Youth of the Year, went on to compete on astate level, won, and was named the Georgia Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Recently, she competed and won the Southeast Regional title as well, which qualifies her to advance on to compete for the national title.”
The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. For 70 years, the Youth of the Year program has honored the most inspiring young people on their path to a great future as well as offer encouragement of these youth to lead, succeed and inspire other kids to follow their example.
Ms. Pegues acknowledged Mayor and Commission before an official congratulation was given by Mayor Tony Paulk. “I am so proud of this young lady,” says Mayor Tony Paulk. “She has outstanding goals, has accomplished so much in her young life, and touched many lives in our community. I would also like to commend her family for the loving and supportive role they have played in her life. We are blessed to have the Boys and Girls Club of Coffee County in our area to encourage our youth.”
As the regional winner, Ms. Pegues will receive a $10,000 scholarship, renewable for up to 4 years up to $40,000. In September, Ms. Pegues will compete for the title of National Youth of the Year in Washington, D.C. The National Youth of the Year award will receive an additional $25,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years up to $100,000 and will have the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States in the White House.
