Hurricane Irma has the Southeast nervously awaiting its arrival. While the massive storm should be weakened significantly by the time it reaches South Georgia, Irma will cause a few problems as she makes her way through.

Coffee County and City of Douglas officials, along with local community partners, are actively monitoring and preparing for Hurricane Irma. The current track still puts Irma off the Georgia coast sometime Sunday into Monday, but this may change as the storm gets closer to north Florida and south Georgia. Local officials will be closely monitoring the progression of this storm and will pass information along to you as we receive it.

Contrary to recent social media posts, Coffee County residents are not under any order of evacuation. Please beware of social media reports from unofficial sources.

Coffee County has been placed under a State of Emergency by Gov. Nathan Deal. This allows for stricter enforcement of price gouging by stores and businesses and lifts some restrictions on the trucking industry for suppliers of gas, fuel and food deliveries during times of emergencies.

Please take time the next couple of days to secure any outside objects such as trampoline and porch/yard furniture. Although Coffee County is not expected to see hurricane force winds, residents will experience stronger wind than normal conditions Sunday through possibly Tuesday.

Please continue to monitor local news outlets for updated information.
