Running back Jameon Gaskin and receiver Milton Jackson scored two touchdowns apiece in the Coffee Trojans’ 35-0 win over the Houston County Bears Friday night in Warner Robins. The Trojans are now 1-0 in region play (4-2 overall). The win broke a two-game losing streak for Coffee and goes a long way in securing a postseason berth in the five-team Region 1-6A.
The Trojans scored on four of their first six possessions – two runs by Gaskin, a touchdown reception by Jackson, and another run by Antonio Dawson – to take a 27-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, defensive back Jarquavious Jefferson intercepted a Houston County pass that the Trojans turned into another score, this one a 20-yard reception by Jackson. Quarterback Wade Sumner and Jackson connected again on the two-point conversion to take a 35-0 lead. The score ushered in a running clock that ended the game pretty quickly.
“This was a good one. I like getting that first region win. It solidifies you getting in the playoffs. But there are still three more to go,” said head coach Robby Pruitt following the game.
After a long absence from Jardine Stadium, the Trojans return home next week to face Northside (Warner Robins) for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Game notes:
-
Jameon Gaskin once again showed his dominance on both sides of the ball. He’s a legitimate Division I talent but he’s not getting a lot of D-I attention at linebacker because of his height. Playing so well at running back could get him the attention he deserves; schools don’t look for quite as much height in the backfield as they do in their linebacking corps.
-
The defense played an excellent game. Gaskin, Josiah Killebrew, Derrick Newton, and Jarquavious Jefferson all played very well.
-
Milton Jackson’s two touchdowns were the his first of the year.
-
The game featured only one turnover – Jefferson’s interception – and very few penalties.
-
Wade Sumner added a pair of touchdown passes Friday, adding to what has been a rather quietly impressive year.
-
The Houston County quarterback had a tough night; Killebrew and Newton terrorized him all night long. They pressured him from the first snap and recorded several sacks.
