The George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) recently had a Scholastic Book Fair. Every student was given a $10 certificate to buy whatever book they would like to read. The certificates were made possible by last years Bikers for Books fundraiser held by last year’s freshman class and parent group.
Last April the Bikers for Books race was held for runners, walkers, bikers and cyclists who ran, walked, road a motorcycle or pedaled a bike. The funds generated from this event were used to pay for a book for every student at GWCFC. “I feel like the book fair promotes reading because students get to choose their own book rather than having to be assigned a book,” said Ms. Angela Booth, GWCFC media specialist. “Students, especially reluctant readers, are more likely to read a book that they get to pick out.” Ms. Booth feels that students who are readers are more likely to become leaders. It is her hope to grow great leaders from Coffee County’s students.
This year’s freshmen class is thankful for what last year’s class did for them, and they hope to help the Class of 2022 experience the Free bookfair, too. Even though this was a long process, the students, parents and teachers of GWCFC made it possible. The Class of 2021 students and parents plan on having another fundraiser in the spring to ensure that the Class of 2022 get to experience the same the free book fair for all students.
