The City of Douglas along with other cities throughout the state of Georgia did their part to bring the Christmas spirit to patients at behavioral health hospitals this year. On Dec. 6, 2017, the Douglas Fire Department and officials from the City of Douglas delivered a check in the amount of $891.76 to Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.

The City of Douglas also contributed locally to Unison Behavioral Health in the amount of $891.76 at the City Commission meeting on Dec. 11, 2017. The monies donated to these foundations were raised by city employees as well as local donations from businesses.

“I am proud to be a part of this great Georgia Municipal Association program,” says Mayor Tony Paulk. “I am also very happy that we chose to donate a portion of the funds raised locally to help citizens in our community.”

The Mayor’s Motorcade program, began as a cooperative effort between the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and Governor Ernest Vandiver and his wife, Betty Vandiver.

The program relies on citizen participation in each city to donate gifts for the patients, many of who would not receive gifts or be recognized without the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade. According to hospital staff, many of the patients at these hospitals have little, if any, support or contact with friends and family.
