Applications are still being accepted for the City of Douglas Mayor’s Office new leadership program for youth, the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DYC). Applications are open to high school students, in grades 9-12, from Coffee County High School or private and home schools located in the city limits, to serve on the inaugural Douglas Youth Council.

“Youth leadership programs are important to our city because they help initiate and foster leadership among youth through educational opportunities and outreach,” says Mayor Tony Paulk. “I’m excited about the opportunity to expose local youth to the operation of our local government, build their leadership skills, and foster their need to become more involved in helping with youth-related issues.”

The Douglas Youth Council will serve as an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission. Once selected, members of the council will have several sessions which will include: orientation, discussion of city issues and brainstorming for new ideas for the Mayor and government leaders; collection of input through outreach, surveys, and community meetings; production of a city-wide youth town hall and television show; and participation in retreats, training, and travel experiences by building leadership skills.

Participants must be students of Coffee County High School or private and home schools located within the city limits. Local principals, school counselors, the Mayor, or Commissioners may nominate students. The DYC will seat up to nine (9) members who will serve a one – four-year terms or until finishing high school. Membership is open to grades 9-12, ages 14-19. Meetings will be held monthly at a set location and students will have to attend a mandatory orientation and adhere to a planned itinerary for a one to a two-year term or until out of high school.

Application deadline: January 2, 2018. To obtain an application or for more information, please visit the City of Douglas website, www.cityofdouglas.com/DYC.
