On Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, City of Douglas employees and community members are invited to participate in the annual “Day On” community project, in honor of the Martin Luther, King Jr. Holiday, at the historic Oak Grove Cemetery located off of Hwy 441S on Hwy. 107, which is also known as the Broxton-West Green road. Traveling from West Green, turn onto the Broxton-West Green road which is Hwy. 107. Volunteers will help rake, weed eat, pick up trash, trim limbs and help with other cleanups in the cemetery, as well as assist documentation of gravesites. Volunteers are asked to dress warm and appropriately (gloves, hat, boots, etc). Those that are volunteering are asked to please bring tools such as rakes, weed eaters, chainsaws, small tools and other yard working/debris removal tools. Any extra tools or machinery that can be used during the “Day On” will be greatly appreciated by organizers.

“We would like to encourage our community and citizens to use the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday as a day to come together and lend a hand for a worthwhile community project,” says City Manager Terrell Jacobs.

Volunteers should meet at the American Legion Post 515, located at 1510 McLean Street on Monday, Jan. 15, at 8 a.m. for a light breakfast prior to traveling to the cemetery site. Volunteers participating in the complimentary breakfast should contact Post 515 Commander Jerome Loving at 912-592-6413.

The Community Day On projects led by Henry Milhollin (Douglas Cemetery Attendant), Terrell Jacobs (City Manager), American Legion Post 515, CHS NJROTC, and other volunteers have helped to clean up and document graves in six Coffee County cemeteries. Anyone interested in volunteering, please contact Douglas Cemetery Attendant Henry Milhollin, at 912-393-4796, Post 515 Commander Jerome Loving at 912-592-6413, or Douglas Fire Chief Larry Wilson at 912-384-4815.
