Douglas visitor information center’s Camellia Garden dedication, designation of placement on Georgia’s Camellia Trail

The Douglas Visitor Information Center (DVIC) would like to invite the public to the Camellia Garden Dedication and Designation of Placement on Georgia’s Camellia Trail ceremony on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Douglas Visitor Information Center. In 2017, the state of Georgia introduced the Georgia Camellia Trail for Georgia travelers to see 30 public gardens across the state. The formal garden located at the DVIC (Ashley-Slater House) is listed as one of the stops on the Camellia Trail.

“We are so excited about the Douglas Visitor Information Center’s camellias being featured on the Georgia Camellia Trail,” says Georgia Henderson, Public Information Director. “We have been busy preparing the garden and planning for this special ceremony which will also honor the late, Mr. Clayton Mathis.”

Mr. Clayton Mathis was a long time, beloved principal of Coffee High School and Master Gardener, who was passionate about camellias. He will be honored posthumously, by the class of 1988 with a special one of a kind bench. The handcrafted bench was constructed by 1988 graduate, Mr. Stacey Roberson. The bench will be placed in the garden for everyone to enjoy the camellias while they are in bloom at the DVIC.

The DVIC, located at 211 S. Gaskin Avenue, has a total of 11 camellias that are blooming normally bloom in late January – February. For more information about the Georgia Camellia Trail, http://www.exploregeorgia.org/itineraries/georgias-camellia-trail.
