The South Georgia State College Hawks opened its 2018 season with a doubleheader loss to Santa Fe at Crider Field on Saturday, Jan. 27. The first game of the day turned into a pitcher’s duel as the Hawks fell to Santa Fe with a score of 3 – 2. Both teams were strong on the mound, but Santa Fe’s hitting led them to the victory. SGSC’s pitcher Mark Mixon started the game for the Hawks and recorded 12 outs. He surrendered one run on three hits over four innings, striking out four. Ian Smith finished out the game and took the loss. Over three innings, he allowed two runs on two hits, striking out two, and walking one. Colby Owens went two for three to lead the Hawks in hits with a double and a homerun. Adding to the hits total with one each was Garrison Hurd, KC Brown and Blake Brito.
In game two, the Hawks watched the game slip away early and could not recover in a 9-2 loss. Santa Fe took the lead on a single in the first inning and never slowed down. Zach Mainor took the loss for the Hawks. He went two and a third innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out one. SGSC’s Peyton Collins tried to get the Hawks going in the fifth inning with a two-run RBI but it wasn’t enough to get them moving in the right direction. Colby Owens and Justin Brooks each added one hit for the Hawks.
The SGSC Hawks will play in a series against Tallahassee Community College beginning Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. in Douglas and then traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., for a game on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
