On Saturday, Feb. 3, the 2018 edition of the South Georgia State College (SGSC) Lady Hawks softball team opened the season on the road with a double header in Daytona Beach, Florida, against the Daytona State Falcons.
In game one, the Lady Hawks fell behind with a final score of 4-0 against the Falcons. Sarah Smith got the start for SGSC in the circle. She went four innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out seven. Tess Robinson and Abbi Lewis entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one inning each.
Kelsey Davis, Michaelin Thomas, Natalie Reveille, Tess Robinson and Logan Mullis each managed one hit to lead the Lady Hawks’ offense. SGSC didn’t commit a single error in the game.
The Lady Hawks won their first game of the year in game two of the double header. They won in eight innings by a score of a 5-4.
In the second inning, the Lady Hawks got their offense started when Destiny McRae doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Daytona State tied things up at four. SGSC took the lead in the top of the eighth as Michaelin Thomas doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring the go-ahead run.
Larren Carter led things off in the circle for SGSC. She lasted five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out four. Sarah Smith came in relief of Carter to pick up her first win of the season.
The Lady Hawks had seven hits in the game. Thomas and Abbi Lewis all had multiple hits. Lewis and Thomas each managed two hits to lead the Hawks’ offense.
