The Leadership Coffee Youth Academy (LCYA) visited the state Capitol and was given a personal tour by our local State Representatives Dominic LaRiccia and Clay Pirkle and our State Senator Tyler Harper. Students toured the Georgia Capitol Museum, a public educational institution housed inside the Capitol that exhibits artifacts, including historic flags and works of art that are on public display. They observed the political and decision making process in action while visiting the Georgia House of Representatives as two bills were presented by House Members and passed the House floor.
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Mark Williams from Wayne County led an unexpected private tour of the Capitol grounds. Students enjoyed seeing the newly erected Martin Luther King statue that overlooks the pastoral home of Ebenezer Baptist Church and MLK Drive.
This new addition to the Capitol grounds was a three year project in the making. As students toured the DNR offices, DNR Commissioner Williams shared information about many of the wildlife artifacts collected during his years as a wildlife conservationist and nature preservationist.
